Most UK visa routes require applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved SELT test under the UK Immigration Rules. The English test was not from a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test provider.
The English language requirement is a pass/fail gate with no discretion. The test must be from an approved provider, at the correct CEFR level, and valid at the date of application. Meeting every other requirement perfectly will not save an application that fails this check.
Based on current UK Home Office immigration rules (updated 2026)
Most UK visa routes require applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved SELT test. Failure to meet the required level (A1 for initial spouse applications, A2 for extensions, B1 for ILR) or submitting a test from a non-approved provider results in automatic refusal.

UKVI maintains a list of approved SELT providers on GOV.UK. As of 2026, the main providers are IELTS for UKVI (by IELTS SELT Consortium), LanguageCert, and Pearson PTE. General IELTS Academic or other non-SELT tests are not accepted.
If your degree was taught or researched in English, you may be exempt. You must obtain a UK ENIC statement confirming this. Degrees from institutions in majority English-speaking countries are more readily accepted.
You can retake the test as many times as needed. There is no limit on attempts. However, each test incurs a fee and the result must be valid at the time of your visa application.
